The Fongoli Chimps
The chimpanzees of Fongoli in Senegal are some of the most interesting chimps in the world. Their habitat is largely grasslands and to adapt to these conditions they behave in a very different way from most other chimps. They are more bipedal (they walk upright) than any other chimp group and they have even been seen to use 鈥渟pears鈥 to hunt smaller primates. Jill Pruetz is the primatologist who studies them 鈥 she believes the Fongoli chimps are important for shedding light on how the ancestors of humans changed as they left the forests and stepped out onto the savannah grasslands.
