Whooper Swans
The mighty Solway firth, Here, acre upon acre of muddy wilderness and marsh might look barren but its one of Scotland's great natural larders. From Autumn until late spring the Solway attracts huge numbers of visitors from the north to make the most of our relatively mild climate and plentiful food supply. Among them are whooper swans that fly in from Iceland. At the reserve near Caerlaverock welcomes these elegant visitors. Individuals can be recognised by the numbers on their legs or the unique yellow and black patterns on their bills. Whooper swans are international high flyers, recorded on RADAR flying at 6 times the height of Ben Nevis at a speed of 140 km/hr assisted by a following wind. They stay here until late April when they make the return journey to the sub arctic to breed.
