Lowestoft Air Show 2013 cancelled
Organisers of the Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival say this year's show could be the last. A lack of funds due to poor weather on day two of this year's event is being blamed.
It has been a day of highly-charged mixed emotions for people in Lowestoft. This morning they woke to the news that the town had been chosen as a Portas Pilot area. The town's shopping sector is in for a boost, with 拢100,000 coming to improve the high street. However, celebrations quickly turned to shock as news began to filter through that the town's jewel-in-the-crown event, the annual airshow, was being cancelled for next year. Our Waveney reporter Guy Campbell has more on both these stories.
New figures indicating that the UK has slipped further into recession have triggered a political row. The economy shrank by 0.7% between April and June, a much bigger drop than expected. It's the third quarter in a row that output has fallen, making it the deepest double-dip recession since the 1950s. The Ipswich MP Ben Gummer says the government is aware that women in refuges could have problems with the introduction of a universal benefit system. Lighthouse Women's Refuge says sorting out individual benefits online will be a real problem for women escaping violence at home. Mr. Gummer tells Foz that they're working on these problems.
