
Why did surgery become important to medicine?
Surgery has existed for thousands of years but was often avoided due to high patient mortality. In emergencies, there were procedures to amputate a limb or relieve pressure from the skull, but more commonly doctors bled patients to balance the four humours or offered dietary advice. However, by 1840, medical thinking had changed and surgery became the best cure for disease.
