Limestone landscapes
Carboniferous limestone is found in the north of England. Limestone pavements, with associated clints and grykes, form because the acid rain water dissolves the limestone. Caves are formed deep beneath the surface.
Where permeable rocks are found, precipitation falling on the land is able to seep through the soil and into the rocks below. For this reason, there are often no surface streams where the underlying rock is limestone.
