Hallsands - destruction of coastland
Hallsands in South Devon was a fishing village lost to the sea in 1917. The village had been protected from the sea by a shingle beach, which absorbed the energy of the waves. However, when the nearby Plymouth dockyard was built using shingle dredged from Hallsands, the beach became rapidly eroded away, exposing the soft rock cliffs below the village. When large storms hit the village, the houses crumbled into the sea.
