Cities grow upwards and outwards (pt 1/2)

An explanation of the original geographical reasons for the growth and development of Gloucester in the 19th century. The safety of a walled city and easy access encouraged trade and small industries. It charts the development of canals for moving coal, the creation of factories alongside these routeways and the building of terraced housing for the workers. It also charts the growth of more expensive suburban housing for the richer merchants and the effects of the development of the new tramway.
