Tributes paid to Suffolk firefighter Alan Soards

An investigation is underway into the death of Lowestoft firefighter Alan Soards. He died whilst undergoing training at the Lee Valley White Water Centre in Hertfordshire.

In the news hour from 5pm, tributes have been paid to a Suffolk fireman who died during a training exercise at an Olympic centre. 38 year old Alan Soards from Lowestoft was taking part in a water rescue training exercise at Lee Valley when he was taken ill yesterday. Foz speaks to our reporter Gareth George who has been following the story.

Ipswich Hospital has been fined 拢1.2m for failing to meet various targets between April and August this year. The penalties have been imposed by the NHS Suffolk Primary Care Trust. Foz asks its Deputy Chief Executive Tracy Dowling why they are fining a hospital that's already in debt. Foz also hears from Ipswich MP Ben Gummer.

Preparations are being made to remove a fin whale from the beach at Shingle Street. The animal became stranded on the coast on Sunday and died shortly afterwards. Experts from London have carried out tests on the body and now responsibility for its removal has passed to Suffolk Coastal District Council. Foz chats to Andrew Nunn, the Cabinet Member for the Green Environment at the local authority.
