Shingle Street whale's sad end

The beached whale at Shingle Street is taken to Stoke-on-Trent to be rendered. The oil will then be used as biofuel.

A local group fights the government over Great Yarmouth coastguard station.

In the news hour from 5pm, the story of the Shingle Street whale is about to reach its end. The animal beached on Sunday and died shortly afterwards. The whale's final destination will be Stoke-on-Trent, but it's spent most of the day at Clarkes of Melton, a rendering plant near Woodbridge. Philip Clarke runs the site. He explains to Foz what rendering actually is.

The clear up has been taking place in Stowmarket after a lightning strike caused an explosion in a house. One man says it felt like a plane had hit their homes when it struck the chimney on a nearby property at around 9 last night. The fire service cordoned off Lavenham Way and officials came in to examine the damage. Deals on Wheels Luke Deal has been at the scene today and gives us the bigger picture.

A group fighting to keep Great Yarmouth Coastguard Station open says it need to make the public aware of the dangers of its closure. The Havenbridge House site serves the northern part of the Suffolk coast and will be shut down as part of the government's plans to modernise the system. The Thames Coastguard will also be axed and calls for the Suffolk coast will be dealt with in Hampshire. Foz hears more from Matthew Smith who's from Great Yarmouth. He contacted the National Coastguard SOS Campaign Group to set up a local branch.

In the first hour from 4pm, The One Show wants to know if you met John Lennon and Yoko Ono when they visited Lavenham in 1969. Foz is also joined by Simon Haines, the man who brings monthly folk and acoustic nights to Hadleigh.

In the music hour from 6pm, Foz chats to British blues star Joanne Shaw Taylor on the eve of her latest UK tour. There's also a sixties triple-shot from The Small Faces.
