Anytus, a high ranking politician in Athens, defends his status to Socrates in an argument. He claims that he is a good man, having ended the recent Spartan tyranny over Athens and because of his family lineage. Socrates argues that he should be judged upon his own merits and that he can't judge him without knowing him better. Anytus believes that Scorates is criticising the establishment of democracy in Athens. Socrates further encourages this misinterpretation by responding that he feels that democracy will only work when all those with the power to vote can be trusted to use it wisely. The extract ends with Anytus stating that Socrates has clearly set himself against the state of Athens by expressing his opposition to Democracy.
