Rome's water supply

Rome was inordinately proud of its aqueducts, which provided the city with a constant supply of fresh water both for drinking and for use in bath-houses and toilets. Pliny described them as 'the greatest wonder the world has ever seen'. Drainage is also discussed and a visit paid to Rome's greatest drain, the 'Cloaca Maxima', first built as early as the seventh century B.C. to drain the marshy land on which the forum now stands. A trip is made to Ostia to look at the remains of a public toilet; and its drainage system is explained.
