Market maths – how many potatoes and other questions
A stallholder in Leicester market explains how he sells all his fruit and vegetables for a pound a bowl, and we ask pupils to work out how much each item would cost. Its harvest time on a Norfolk potato farm and the farmer explains how much land he’s got and the rate of return he expects to get. From what he tells us, pupils can work out how many potatoes the farmer harvests and what he might sell them for. A potter tells us the selling price of one of his mugs, the cost of the raw materials and how long it takes him to make. From that, pupils can work out whether he makes living from his craft.
