A day in the life of a child living in the desert region of Rajasthan

A day in the life of a child and his family in the Thar Desert region of Rajasthan in north-west India. The temperature fluctuates enormously between the heat of the day and the coldness at night. Rainfall is low and water is found deep below the ground. Small communities live in the area and life in the desert is slow and tough.

The young boy milks the goat before school and, during the day, the women walk many kilometres to collect water in clay pots. The father is a shoemaker. It is possible to hitch a lift home from school on a passing camel. Family members share their evening meal and tell each other stories since they do not have a TV. After dinner there is time to play with other children, complete homework and help make shoes.
