Woodland, pond and ditch habitats

A garden has been designed to include a number of different habitats. It includes a woodland edge, a pond and a ditch.

The woodland edge has plants which need shade. Dead wood is vital in this habitat for insects such as woodlice. The pond has typical aquatic plants and animals, as well as visiting insects such as dragonflies. Toads, frogs and newts need two habitats - a pond for breeding and a moist ditch for the summer months. The plants in the ditch rely on the moist conditions for survival.
