Industry in Dundee (pt 1/2)
In the late 19th and early 20th century Dundee was famed for its textile industry, particularly the production of jute. Dundee's history of whaling, shipbuilding and linen processing meant it was well set up to succeed at this industry. The industry employed many women rather than men, reversing the traditional roles of breadwinning and childcare. After World War II the industry fell into steep decline, unable to compete with cheap labour in India.
