Expanding the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is going through an extensive expansion plan. The Panama Canal cuts through Panama between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and is one of the busiest and most important shipping routes in the world. With container ships paying up to $250,000 to use it, it is the country's biggest source of income. It was the biggest and most difficult engineering project of its time and, now a hundred years on, it's having a major facelift. Jorge de la Guardia is the Executive Manager of the Locks Project and outlines the reasons and challenges behind this enormous expansion programme.
