A dramatised episode about the childhood of Charles Dickens, focusing on his life in the city and the continuing debt problems facing his family. Charles' mother runs a school but there are no pupils so she is forced to sell the family possessions, including the books so treasured by her son. Meanwhile Charles is offered a job in the counting house of a boot blacking factory for six shillings a week.
