Racial segregation on US public transport
Four years after the 1957 Civil Rights Act, public transport was still segregated. In 1961, a group of multi-racial students attempted to ride together from Washington to New Orleans. The 'Freedom Rides' showed that the law and reality were very different, as the students were repeatedly attacked on their journey.
