The Civil Rights Act of 1964

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed racial discrimination in hotels, motels, cinemas and restaurants, and encouraged the desegregation of schools. However, it did not abolish the literacy tests that prevented some people from voting. African American civil rights activists discuss the difficulties that they faced in their efforts to register to vote.
