Housing - Right to Buy scheme
After the Second World War, the British government aimed to reduce squalor through an ambitious house building scheme that would result in affordable rented housing provided by local councils. In 1980, the Conservative government gave council tenants the right to buy their own homes at discounted rates. This has resulted in financial benefits for some but has made it more difficult for others to buy a house.
