1839 Chartist Rising - Newport
An overview of the circumstances leading to, and major events of, the Chartist rising in Newport in 1839. The participants were met in Newport by a troop of soldiers; the resulting fight led to 22 deaths. The three leaders, Frost, Williams and Jones were originally sentenced to death, but the sentences were later commuted to transportation.
