Simulating the experience of F1 racing through realistic computer models
Realistic, computer-controlled racing simulators are used for training F1 drivers. To compete as a racing driver, you need a comprehensive knowledge of both the car and the track. The University of Hertfordshire鈥檚 racing simulator allows drivers to acquire experience of both. The simulator hardware includes high resolution screens, realistic controls and hydraulic legs to create the sensation of movement. Its programmers have developed a detailed model, incorporating the laws of physics and data that describes the track and the car in detail.
Changing the rules, or information on which the model is based, changes the entire simulation. The simulator is controlled by a program with numerous if-then statements, ensuring the simulator responds accurately as inputs change. Whilst the simulation is not perfect, faster computers will mean that its successors are even more realistic.
