Exploring what gases make up the air around us
Dr Peter Wothers performs a series of chemistry experiments in his laboratory at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Chemistry. The theme is one of the ancient alchemical elements, ‘Air’. He invites three Key Stage 3 students to his laboratory to help him. They begin by exploring the gases that make up the air around us. Next they measure the density of carbon dioxide. The team then extract carbon dioxide from calcium carbonate and create ‘dry ice’. Finally they explore how limewater is made.
