Bracchi's in the Rhondda
Sara Edwards interviews an Italian caf茅 owner, Aldo from Porth in the Rhondda, over a cup of coffee. He traces the history of Italian immigration into the valleys, and the growth of the Italian cafes ( called colloquially 'Bracchis') as the coal industry developed through the early years of the 20th century. Aldo recalls the hissing of the coffee machines in the cafes and the use of these machines to steam pies. He lists the names of the Italian families who moved into the Rhondda, starting with the Bracchi family who came first and gave the local name to the caf茅s.
