The composer Big George explains how beat is important in a huge range of music from across the world. A range of music is used to emphasise the importance of beat and rhythm in music. Musical extracts include Aboriginal pop music, Caribbean Carnival, Indian Tabla and Western drum kit. Big George explains how the BPM (beats per minute) of a piece of music is important because it affects our reaction to it. A range of tempos are discussed including rave music which can have a BPM of over 200, and 70s disco which is often performed at a BPM of 137.
