The impact of guns on the Suri people
The Suri tribe are used to conflict, but the emergence of a new gun culture threatens to destabilise their society. Suri culture demands that men train as warriors. Stick-fighting events take place from a young age to train young men and also to allow them to meet women. These are violent encounters and people can be killed. The Suri are in constant conflict with the neighbouring Bume tribes over land and cattle. The availability of guns from Sudan has upset the order amongst the groups.
