The Great Big Energy Saving Challenge
Kate Humble challenges the residents of an ordinary street in the Scottish coastal town of Stonehaven to cut the amount of gas and electricity they use by 30% in just three weeks.
Could you cut the amount of gas and electricity you use by 30% in just three weeks? That's the challenge Kate Humble set the residents of one ordinary street in the town of Stonehaven on the east coast of Scotland.
Kate asked them to slash their energy consumption just by changing the way they live their lives. But this was April and freezing cold. These were families with little or no knowledge of how to save power.
However the residents weren't alone. Energy expert Lucy Conway, who lives completely off grid on the Island of Eigg, was on hand to provide energy saving tips and advice. The One Show's engineering expert Marty Jopson showed them how to harness the power of the sun.
Also on the street was Dr Alan Owen sustainability director from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Inside every house was placed an energy monitor recording how much gas and electricity the families were using.
Dr Owen used this data to determine which of the families were making the biggest savings. Find out if they hit the target of 30% and see if any of these energy saving tips could work in your home.
