Sri Lanka and Italy

Fergal Keane remembers his days as a cub reporter, and meets an editor still going strong in Jaffna; Joanna Robertson learns why traditional artisans are shutting up shop in Rome

Some people are predicting the death of print journalism - but in many parts of the world, the newsrooms and presses are as busy as they ever were, and the journalists just as keen to chase down the truth. In Jaffna, in northern Sri Lanka, Fergal Keane remembers his days as a cub reporter on the Limerick Leader and Chronicle, and meets M. V. Kanamaylnathan, an editor-in-chief who is still going strong, despite threats and violence against him and his staff.

In Italy, by contrast, some are drifting away from the old ways, or being driven out by a tidal wave of global tourism. Joanna Robertson learns why traditional artisans from biscuit-makers to carpenters are shutting up shop in Rome.
