Facial difference

Dr Chetna Kang and Toby Friedner focus on disability and mental health.

This is 11 year old Alfie from Bedfordshire. He was born with a condition that affected his development in the womb. Among other things it meant Alfie was born without an ear. But in 2012 Alfie had surgery to create a new ear from one of his ribs.

For people like Alfie, who have a facial difference, life can be a challenge. Starring and insensitive comments are things Alfie and his family have faced frequently over the years.

But there's lots of work being done to help people like Alfie and to try and change the way society treats people who look different.
