Millions of pounds are being spent on our buses in Leicester, but is it making a difference? Earlier this week we heard about plans by First Bus to launch a fleet of 18 state-of-the-art vehicles, with leather seats and WIFI. And now one of its competitors - Arriva - has announced the results of a two-and-a-half million pound investment from the government's Better Bus Area Fund. It says passenger numbers are up by more than 10% over the past year, following a number of changes. These include new bus lanes, shelters, refurbished vehicles, and the introduction of what it calls an 'enhanced cleaning regime'. This year marks the centenary of the Women's Institute, the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. And it seems the organisation is in rude health with 17,000 new joiners, 37 new WIs and even their first appearance at Glastonbury! Today the Queen will be attending their AGM at the Royal Albert Hall to mark the anniversary.
