Carers, Liz Kendall and Rainbows.
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
Across Leicestershire there's an army of 70,000 unpaid carers looking after people, often loved ones, who need support ... but who cares for them? As part of National carers week a new scheme has been launched in Leicestershire to identify and support local carers. It can be exhausting looking after someone else, and it's estimated that 51 per cent of all carers have long standing health problems of their own, often causes by the strain of providing care. But support is available and according to the Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, carers shouldn't suffer in silence until their own health is destroyed. The Leicester West MP Liz Kendall has won a place on the ballot for the Labour party leadership after securing the support of 35 of her party's MPs. According to figures released by Labour, she's one of three candidates to gain the support needed along with the Shadow Health Secretary, Andy Burnham and the Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. Nominations close in less than a week and then the successful candiates will spend the summer convincing party members that they're the right person to lead Labour. In a couple of weeks time two tireless fundraisers for the Rainbows Childrens' hospice in Loughborough are retiring from their roles having helped raise a total of millions of pounds.
