Mainline, Ring Road and The Rutland Swimmer

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

Council leaders, business managers and environmentalists in Leicestershire have heaped pressure on the government to do something about the pause to a 500-million pound project which would transform the region's railway. In June, the Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin announced that he'd be halting plans to electrify the Midland Mainline. He blamed Network Rail for rising costs and missed targets. Announcing a "pause" in proceedings he said at the time: "I want it to be done and done well. It will be part of our future plans for the route". But almost three months on, there's no clues as to when the button will be "unpaused". And this has prompted the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce, the Green Party and local Council leaders in Leicestershire to write to the Government urging them to get on with it.
Also, could Melton Mowbray finally be getting a ring road? It's been discussed at Melton Borough Council since the nineties, and in 2008, people living in and around the town were told it would be built this year. But since then, both Melton Borough and Leicestershire County Councils have got bogged down in trying to find proposals that are welcomed by both the people who live in the town, local businesses and the government or house-builders who could help fund the scheme.
And, while most 14-year olds are getting to grips with a new year at school - one teenager in Oakham is preparing for a mammoth swimming challenge - to try to save the life of a special dog. The Wright family came across little Grace whilst on holiday in Tunisia in June. She was lying under a tree, and the rest of her brothers and sisters had been killed by a hotel gardener. The same would've happened to her until the family stepped in and safely got her to a kennels - but now they want to go a step further. 14-year old Ben Wright has decided to take the plunge to raise the funds needed - but what is he doing?
