Jeremy Corbyn, Lip Reading & The Living Wage
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
Jeremy Corbyn has announced some of his main Shadow Cabinet appointments after his dramatic victory as Labour leader. His campaign manager John McDonnell becomes Shadow Chancellor - one of a number of new faces in the top team. One of leadership rivals Andy Burnham is the new Shadow Home Secretary. But several front benchers have stepped down, saying they can't serve under him because of policy differences.
Also, losing your hearing is an isolating and distressing experience, and for those people who experience this - finding new ways to communicate effectively is vitally important. Today marks the start of 'Lipreading awareness week' - a skill which can transform the lives of those suffering hearing loss. But despite tens of thousands of people across Leicestershire struggling with their hearing, there are relatively few people teaching the skill. But supported by the charity the Leslie Edwards Trust and a county council grant, there are now classes available to learn how to lip read and meet others in a similar situation.
And, some of Leicestershire's biggest employers are wondering how they will afford the new national living wage when it comes into force next year. From April 2016 workers over 25 will get a minimum of 7 pounds 20 an hour, and this is expected to rise to 9 pounds 35 in 2020. But at a time of deep cuts for our councils, and some uncertainty in the wider economy, how do employers plan on budgeting for it?
