Battle of Britain, Bobsled and The Golden Mile

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

A service will be held in St Paul's Cathedral to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain-- when the RAF managed to stop the German air force gaining supremacy in the skies over the UK. Organised with the RAF Association, the service will commemorate 'the Many' who supported 'the Few' - all those involved, including ground crew, radar operatives, and maintenance operatives - as well as flight crew and pilots. Five years ago, the 大象传媒 was allowed to accompany 14 of the surviving pilots from the Battle of Britain as they were taken on a commemorative flight over Southern England. The BA jet they were aboard flew with a Spitfire and a Hurricane fighter alongside, as those survivors from 1940 recalled the dangers they'd all faced day to day 70 years before. 93 year old Bill Green was one of those veterans - he'd been a Sergeant with 501 Squadron back in 1940. Sadly Bill died last November, but - in this 75th anniversary year of the battle - his family have granted permission to once again hear his story in his own words.
Also, a Leicestershire teenager is hoping for Olympic success - after a change in sports! 15 year-old Adam Hames is already a European karate champion, but he's given that all up for the chance to represent Team GB in the bobsled at the Winter Olympics!
And, private consultants are being brought in by the city council for a revamp of Leicester's Golden Mile. 4-million pounds has already been spent on the demolition of Belgrave Flyover, along with a remodelling of Belgrave Circle. The work took more than a year to complete, and many local firms said the disruption took a huge bite out of their profits. But now the City mayor is inviting business owners and residents to come up with new ideas for revamping the rest of Belgrave Road. And to sort through these suggestions and come up with a grand plan for the Golden Mile, Sir Peter Soulsby is bringing in a transport-planning consultancy firm.
