"Someone will have to die for policy makers see sense."
That's the worry for some people in Leicestershire as a consultation is launched into controversial cuts to the county's fire service. Just two weeks ago, the Fire Authority and Fire Service here in Leicestershire announced drastic plans to make around 90 redundancies, close Leicester Central and Kibworth fire stations, and get rid of 11 engines too. But ever since the plans were outlined critics have argued that it would put people's safety at risk. In fact, just last night we brought you the news that the issue was even being brought up in a so-called 'extraordinary meeting' at Leicestershire County Council.
Also, this Sunday, rugby fans from all over the world will converge on Leicester for the first of the three games at Leicester City's stadium. Argentina will take on Tonga in that first game with events and festivals taking place across the city. Lots of local people are involved with the events and games as volunteers. But one choir has the opportunity to perform for a global audience - singing the national anthems at all three games.
And, doctors have performed the world's first embryonic stem cell operation aimed at curing blindness in older people. Age-Related Macular Degeneration is a condition which causes partial blindness and affects around 25 per cent of over 60s in the UK. The procedure involves taking a single stem cell from an embryo and growing it into a patch of cells that can be transplanted into the eye.
