Foodbanks, Mainline & Smoking Around Minors
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
Foodbanks have become a symbol of poverty in the UK over the past few years, with thousands of families continuing to use them - despite the economy showing signs of recovery. But a new report for the city council says there are still 27 foodbanks in Leicester alone - handing out more than 800 parcels every week. The issue will be discussed at a council meeting later tonight.
Also, it's been on and off, paused and unpaused more times than an old cassette tape machine. We're talking of course about electrification of the Midland Mainline between here and London. Now it's back on - as we reported yesterday lunchtime - our local politicians want it sooner rather than later. They're pressing the government and Network Rail to give more precise details over when faster, smoother electric train services will start operating between Leicestershire and the capital.
And, smoking in cars - when children are in the vehicles - is banned from today. Of course this new law is designed to help protect children from the dangers of secondhand smoke. And some would say it's long overdue. Experiments have shown even with a window open it leaves kids exposed to levels of dangerous chemicals more than a hundred times higher than recommended safety guidelines.
Under the ban both the driver and the smoker can be fined 拢50 if anyone smokes in a vehicle with a person who is under eighteen.
