Arriva, Refugees & John Lennon

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

A patient transport service heavily criticised and repeatedly punished for failing to meet targets has said sorry - but has also made clear it's determined to continue in the role. Arriva Transport Solutions is a private firm contracted by the NHS to ferry patients to and from non-urgent medical appointments Leicestershire. But since winning the contract three years ago, it's failed to reach a single performance target and, consequently, been repeatedly hit with punishing fines.
Also, it's been a month since that harrowing picture of a 3 year old boy found washed up on a Turkish beach brought the plight of refugees home to many us here in Leicestershire and Rutland. The shocking image of little Aylan Kurdi lying face down quickly prompted many into collecting food, clothing and other essentials for those in need. Dozens of you handed items to charities, whilst some went as far as driving to Europe to deliver them personally. A month later though, with the story no longer making headlines, has public opinion about the crisis changed?
And, John Lennon would have been 75 today. Events are taking place to remember the former Beatle in Liverpool, where he was born - and in New York, where he was shot and killed. Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, is marking the anniversary at a ceremony in Iceland tonight.
