Tunstall's Golden Torch, 1965-1973

Tunstall's Golden Torch, 1965-1973
The Golden Torch opened in 1965 as a mod club听and from 1967 became a major soul venue similar to Manchester's Twisted Wheel. Following the closure of the Wheel in 1971, the Torch became the premier all-nighter Northern Soul听club in the UK,听but became a victim of its own success as the听small 500-capacity听venue in a quiet听residential backstreet听became plagued by drug-taking, overcrowding and noise complaints.听

Just as with The Twisted Wheel, the club's license was not renewed by the local听council听and it closed in 1973.听Years after the building was demolished, former club barman John O'Brien commissioned a plaque for the site of the Torch. Due to treatment for a serious听brain tumour he got the dates听mixed up but the plaque remains as a memorial to the venue听and the man known as OB.
