Libraries, Holidays & Hoverboards

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

If you're a regular user of your local library, you'll be aware aware of the fundamental changes which are transforming the service across Leicestershire. But those changes aren't being welcomed by some communities. There's been a furious reaction by Councillors and people living in a part of Leicestershire at the thought of their library closing and replaced with a mobile service. Last year the County Council asked 36 communities to voluntarily manage their own libraries to try and save 拢800,000 a year. In most areas that's happening, but not in Barwell, Braunstone Town, Mountsorrel and Narborough. So people in those areas are being asked to consider using a mobile service, if no group comes up with a viable plan.
Also, there's a call for head teachers to be given more discretion to decide whether children can be taken out of school for holidays. Local councils are warning that the current system is punitive and unfair. The government has cracked down on parents who withdraw their children without permission, and the number of people fined has increased significantly.
And, today - October the 21st - is Back to the Future Day. It's the exact date that Marty McFly and Doc Brown arrive in the future, in the second "Back to the Future" film, released in 1989. The movie imagined a 2015 with hoverboards, flying cars, and self-tying shoes. Some of the film's predictions have come true. 大象传媒 Radio Leicester's Jack Rafferty has been asking some of you what you'd like to see turn to reality.
