Crime, Banking & Jet Engines
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
Here's a scenario - If you were unlucky enough to go through the distressing experience of being burgled - is it reasonable to expect the police to come along and investigate? Police forces up and down the country say they're having to think carefully about what crimes they investigate - with more government cuts on the horizon. Earlier this week we heard how changes to a government funding formula could leave Leicestershire 拢700,000 worse off each year.
Also, the Competition and Markets Authority will this morning release its report into how competitive the British banking sector.
It'll look at whether it's too dominated by the big four banking groups that most of us use everyday - Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and RBS. The report will look into how banks treat customers with current accounts and in particular why so few of us switch.
And, if you like aeroplanes perched in unusual landing places, we may have just the job for you! If you're familiar with a certain traffic island on the outskirts of Lutterworth, then you'll know what we're referring to. It is, of course, the roundabout made unique by the fact it features a striking life-sized model of a silver jet plane as a memorial to the inventor of the jet engine, Sir Frank Whittle who developed some of the world's first jet engines at the British Thomson-Houston works in Lutterworth during the late 1930s and the 1940s. The memorial was installed 11 years ago as a dedication the engineering genius - but now it's showing signs of wear given it's had to withstand all weathers. So the search is on to find a team willing to restore its supersonic sparkle.
