Tim Peake, Jack Adcock & The New Bishop
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
Today British astronaut Tim Peake will be launched into space. The former british army platoon commander will head to the international space station where he will spend six months, becoming the first european space agency funded British astronaut to go to the station. Since the retirement of the US space shuttle programme the only way to get to the international space station is via the Russian Soyuz launch system. Tim Peake will take off from a cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
Also, the parents of a six-year-old boy who died in hospital have been reacting to the sentence of a doctor and an agency nurse who "seriously neglected" him. Jack Adcock died from a cardiac arrest caused by sepsis - after he was admitted in February 2011. Doctor Hadiza Bawa-Garba and agency nurse Isobel Amaro have been given two-year suspended jail sentences after both were convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence following a 6-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court.
And, after months of waiting, today is finally the day when we discover the identity of the new Bishop of Leicester. Tim Stevens' successor will be announced on the Downing Street website at 10 o'clock this morning and in the hours that follow, will begin visiting members of the local church community. It's the Queen who appoints a new Bishop, on the advice of the Prime Minister. Her representative in the county is the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Lady Gretton, who worked closely with the previous Bishop - Bishop Tim - at civic, religious and social events around the county.
