Deportation, Coalville & Older Drivers
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
A Leicestershire man claims he was detained for 13 hours at a US airport and deported back to UK, because of his race. Last week, 24-year old Amreet Surana from Thurmaston flew off to the States for a 6 week business trip. But when he landed he was stopped, taken away by border staff and questioned about his true intentions. Amreet claims he had the right paperwork and had no intention of staying longer than he needed. Speaking exclusively to 大象传媒 Radio Leicester, he told Manish Verma how he believes his appearance led to his treatment.
Also, what next for Coalville? That's the question many are asking after a troubling week when hopes of a new museum to replace Snibston were lost and national retailer Brantano, which had a base in the town, went into administration. Well North West Leicestershire District Council point to the so called 'Coalville Project'. 大象传媒 Radio Leicester's Helen McCarthy is in the town to tell us more.
And, the family of a man who was killed when an elderly man drove the wrong way up the M1 in Leicestershire are calling for older drivers to be tested before being able to renew their licence. 27-year old Michael Luciw, from Nottingham, had just been picked up for work and was in a van travelling down the M1 near to junction 24 on the 12th October last year when the vehicle met another head on. Albert Newman, who was 87, had taken a wrong turn and had joined the motorway on the wrong carriageway. Both he and Michael died in the collision. The driver of the van Michael was in was injured.
Also in the show, this week marks the 50th anniversary of legendary toy Action Man. We hear a brief history. A look back at what was a fantasic weekend for the Foxes, and we hear a cancer charity is calling for more young women to have a regular smear test.
