Brantano, Magna Park & Prison
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
The Leicestershire based shoe retailer Brantano has gone into administration. The firm employs 200 staff at it's head office in Coalville, where it runs 140 stores across the UK. Of course, many Leicestershire people will remember that Brantano UK formed in 1998, from the old British Shoe Corporation. 大象传媒 Radio Leicester's at Helen McCarthy is at the Brantano site at Bardon Hill.
Also, a Leicestershire MP says there's no need to expand Europe's largest distribution centre, which happens to be in Leicestershire, despite it potentially bringing thousands of new jobs. Next week, plans to build massive new warehouses to grow Magna Park in Lutterworth are set to be approved by Harborough Distrcit Council, creating lots of new vacancies in the process. But do the plans make sense?
And, 大象传媒 Radio Leicester has been told that inmates at Leicester Prison smashed through their cell walls and staged a four-hour stand-off with guards last month. It's thought that it started when one prisoner started to smash his wall, but then five others joined in. The Prison Officers Association says within the space of three hours they broke through the walls in the segregation units and national prison guards had to be deployed to resolve the situation. The Ministry of Justice has said there's no evidence that it was an escape attempt and no staff were injured- but police are investigating. Well it comes after a report last year described conditions in the unit at Leicester prison as "poor" because of overcrowding.
Also in the show, we preview City's clash with Stoke at the weekend, and disguss the fan backlash after the upcoming away fixture at Arsenal was rescheduled. Hear about the school sport proving a hit with a women of any age, as well as new nature reserves here in Leicestershire!
