Paula Radcliffe: “I tore my colon while breaking the marathon world record”
Women’s marathon runner Paula Radcliffe has revealed she tore the lining of her colon during her world record-breaking race in 2002.
She recalls passing blood straight after the race, saying: “I, basically – and it’s pretty gross – had taken off the lining of the last part of my colon."
Radcliffe also discussed having a particularly high pain threshold during racing.
“You have to have a certain drive and you have to enjoy that drive. You don’t feel it as pain, you feel it as more of a challenge than actual pain – you block it out,” said the world record holder.
