In session

This week's live session comes from a Worcestershire band that has been together since the 鈥70s and still making music to this day.

Quill, whose members have worked with bands such as ELO, The Move and Black Sabbath, regularly tour with Jasper Carrott.

But four years ago, their bassist - who was married to the lead singer - died of a heart attack, leaving the future of the band in question.

After an emotional couple of years, the group decided to complete some of Ben Brain's unfinished tracks - creating a whole new album of original songs along with artwork that he'd painted in his spare time.

His wife, Joy, has subsequently become a full time songwriter.

鈥淎 stunningly flawless live show filled with energy, incredible musicianship and a pedigree as long as your arm!鈥 - Andrew Marston.

The Marr's Bar

Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Jim Capaldi, Newton Faulkner, The Beat, The Blockheads, Bowling For Soup, The Damned, Glenn Tilbrook, Imelda May, Nizlopi, The Selector, Wheatus, Wilko Johnson, Paul Young, Stevie Winwood - those are just some of the names that have played at the Marr's Bar in Worcester.

As we celebrate Independent Venue Week, we look back at 20 years of music making the city with the venue's owner Brian Maher.

The venue was originally a dance studio and had almost been given away because of the state it was in after being purchased at auction.

Other artists to have graced the stages include Amy Wadge, Andreya Triana, Blaze Bayley, Chris Difford, Chris Helme, Dreadzone, Jackie Leven, Mike D'Abo, Mark Morriss of Bluetones, Mike Watt, Scott Matthews and Steve Craddock.

SLAP Magazine

As part of Independent Venue Week, we've been looking at the people who make the local scene tick.

Step forth Mark Hogan, who's been the driving force behind SLAP Magazine - who've just released their 88th issue.

As well as editing and printing the monthly publication, Mark is also the tour manager of the '90s Britpop band Dodgy - and also works as a promoter.

Promoters

You have a band and you know somebody that runs a pub. What more do you need? A promoter, of course!

The role of a promoter is many and varied, but essentially they're the people who put on the gigs - acting as a link between the band/DJ and the venue.

While it's easy enough to play the backroom of the Dog & Duck to your family and friends, a promoter is normally the person that books and pays a band, hires the venue, advertises the event and handles all costs related to the show.

It's a bit of a dark art - and could earn you thousands - or leave you with masses of debt with no clear boundaries of "how much publicity is too much publicity" if tickets aren't being sold.

But, almost certainly, the biggest shows you've ever been to - have been staged this way.

Samantha Daly, from Worcester, talks about how she organised her very first Uncover event.

大象传媒 Music Introducing in Kidderminster

This month's sessions were recorded at one of the main musical hubs in Herefordshire & Worcestershire.

Kidderminster College, which was also the springboard of the highly successful MAS Records, has been offering students an insight into the music industry in their performance, production and technology courses.

Alumni include Quantic, Funkagenda and The Twang.

Session tracks: The Humdrum Express

This week, Steve Lamacq hosted his 大象传媒 6 Music show from our Worcester studios - and one of his special guests was the offbeat poet/musician Ian Passey, AKA The Humdrum Express, from Kidderminster.

Ian's been writing tongue-in-cheek observational based humour tracks for a number of years, regularly performing at the region's leading festivals.

Tonight, we get his insight into the local music scene and hear a couple of the track he performed live on national radio.

大象传媒 Music Introducing in Ledbury

Our next recording session will take place on Sunday, 24 February at The Market Theatre in Ledbury.

The venue now holds the baton after a long history of performances in the town 鈥 dating back as far as the 19th century.

We'll be bringing along handpicked musicians from Herefordshire and Worcestershire to record their live sessions for broadcast.

They've all uploaded their tracks to the 大象传媒 Music Introducing Uploader - but didn't know they were being considered for this incredible opportunity!

This free event, which is open to everybody, kicks off at 6pm and you're more than welcome to turn up anytime until 10.30pm.
