Loot boxes: I blew my university savings playing Fifa
Jonathan Peniket says he spent the money his parents had saved for his future - nearly 拢3000 - on Fifa 鈥榣oot boxes鈥.
Speaking to 5 Live Investigations Unit, he says he became 鈥渁ddicted to the buzz of chance鈥 of buying and opening the online 鈥榩acks鈥 after his mum was diagnosed with cancer when he was 17.
The House of Lords Gambling Committee is calling for loot boxes, which are not currently considered to be gambling, to be regulated immediately.
The makers of Fifa, EA Sports, deny any aspect of the game constitutes gambling - and say Fifa Ultimate Team can be played without spending any money and that purchases are entirely optional. Fifa was approached for comment, but has not yet responded.
