Met Police officer: Breaking down barriers through netball helped young people ‘thrive’.

PC Emma Simms on how sport builds bridges between police and young women in south London.

PC Emma Simms is one of the Youth Engagement and Diversion Officers with the Met Police who helped set up an initiative to try to improve relationships with young women in South London.

Beyond the Court is a special project that was created to engage girls who may be at risk of coming into contact with the police, and to empower them to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

The partnership between England Netball and the Met Police aims to use the power of sport to build trust between young women and the police.

PC Simms told 5 Live Drive’s Clare McDonnell, “We really wanted to create a project exclusively for young girls, and we found that it helped create a safe environment for girls.

“We would all get together, have fun, play netball, and also break down barriers between the police and young people.

“It was great to see these young girls coming to us, very nervous at first, and throughout the project we watched them thrive”, she added.
