Why thermal paint might not be the answer when it comes to insulation

Handyman Wayne Perrey heads into the lab to put thermal paint to the test.

Rising energy bills show no sign of slowing down. With another price hike coming in April, it's no surprise people are looking for new ways to cut costs and one option is so-called thermal paint.

Marketed as a way to improve energy efficiency by trapping heat in the home – handyman Wayne Perrey heads into the lab to put them to the test. He'll hear why the technology is flawed, rendering the paint practically useless and finds out about some affordable alternatives that actually get the job done.

Responding to the film, industry body the British Coatings Federation, or BCF, said that while some insulating coatings can be effective as part of a broader solution, they are typically thicker than those tested by the ´óÏó´«Ã½, and require professional application. The BCF believes it’s unlikely that thin coatings can achieve the thermal performance claimed by manufacturers.

The BCF says it is committed to investigating misleading marketing, and that an increase in misleading environmental claims from non-BCF members, has prompted the creation of a Green Claims Guide for decorative paints, which can be found on the BCF website.

It says it believes its own members do not make unsupported claims.
