Strictly dreams can come true and Zara's is just getting started
Zara first hit our screens in 2018, after entering the Love Island villa during week three as a bombshell. Turning heads, she lasted ten days in the competition before being eliminated. A year after her time on the show, she reunited with some of her fellow islanders to take part in X Factor: Celebrity. Forming a group called No Love Lost, they were mentored by judge Simon Cowell until they were eliminated in week three.
Following this, she joined the cast of Made in Chelsea after beginning a relationship with one of the show’s stars Sam Thompson, appearing on the show for over a year, one of her biggest storylines documented her relationship with Sam.
In 2020, Zara worked with the 大象传媒 on an authored documentary Zara McDermott: Revenge Porn, featuring on her personal experiences of it. This led to a nomination for a National Television Award and with a newfound desire to pursue documentary-making, Zara departed from Made in Chelsea in December 2020.
By November 2021, her second documentary, entitled Zara McDermott Uncovers: Rape Culture was released, detailing her own experience of sexual assault and showcasing an investigation of sexism and ‘rape culture’ in Britain.
Outside of the documentary space, Zara has worked with the government and the Home Office on several campaigns to end violence against women and girls. Making history, her efforts have helped to change the law for victims of digital abuse, by making it a criminal offence to threaten someone with sharing their private imagery, which has allowed her to become recognised by not only Queen Camilla, but the Refuge charity for her help with young people.
Zara’s third documentary project, Zara McDermott: Disordered Eating aired in November 2022 on 大象传媒 Three. The documentary focused on the huge rise in eating disorders amongst children and young people. In 2023, Zara was made an ambassador for the Shaping Us campaign for the Centre of Early Childhood, which was launched by Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales.
