Verloc's younger wife, Winnie, is the working class daughter of a publican.

She married not for love, but to provide a home for her and , and so that they could all escape from her abusive father.

Winnie is a loyal wife, despite being attracted to . She cares deeply for her young brother - a relationship which is more like mother and son.

Outwardly tough and able to cope (and deal with the customers in the shop), Verloc’s actions prove tragic for their relationship.
